At Stone Trough Winery WE LOVE TEXAS WINE. So we're building relationships with Great Texas Wineries to stock a few of their fine wines in our cellar. Our goal is to make it convenient for you to experience great wines from around Texas, and to encourage you to visit the participating wineries so you can experience all they have to offer.

GROWING INTO
STONE TROUGH MERCANTILE
We really did not get off to a good start, as our vineyard plans were severely set back when we lost the vines we planted during covid in 2020 to the "freezemageddon" of 2021. So, we shifted gears and contracted with a couple of wineries to acquire and produce the wines Stone Trough Winery is now serving. We also continued working to complete the remodel of what is now the Stone Trough Mercantile building. Our vineyard plans are to replant the vineyard in 2023 (on a much smaller scale than originally planned) and become more involved in the producing the wines we serve by working alongside the established wineries and wine makers we are building production relationships with.
FAMILY & FARM FOCUSED
As we were preparing to plant the vineyard, we were invited to have dinner with a biologist working on a composting project in regenerative agriculture. The insight we gained from him into regenerative agricultural practices led us to adopt regenerative practices to manage the cattle on the farm in an effort to rebuild the farm’s ecosystem and to produce healthy foods for our community. Soon our regenerative journey led us to acquiring chickens to produce eggs and meat, heritage turkeys, a small flock of St. Croix hair sheep, a “guard” donkey, and assorted dogs and cats.
But the most interesting arrival of all was when our three adult children (Cole, Kendall & Hayden) also decided to join us on the farm. We have been led to become a multi-generational family (a living arrangement mostly abandoned in the United States, but one that Kevin had long believed could enhance the quality of life for his family), living on a farm that we now call Fingerprint Farms. Our children help us manage the expanded family businesses, and the benefits of the unexpected change to multi-generational living are deeply enhancing the quality of our lives.
"WALKING
THE ROAD OF LIFE IS BETTER
TOGETHER
THAN APART."
HOW WE GOT
STARTED
We are owners Kevin and Stephanie Maxwell. A gift from God, we acquired a small farm outside of downtown Cleburne, TX, in 2016 and planned on holding the land as an investment and then developing it into residential lots. As urban folks who never intended to own a farm, the land simply looked like a good investment for our family. However, the previous rancher who was running cattle on the land decided he wanted out of the cattle business. We were lead by the Lord to buy his cows to raise some beef. As we spent time on the farm, our love for the land grew. We even began to pursue the possibility of planting a vineyard on a beautiful hillside pasture in the middle of the farm. When we decided to move forward with the vineyard, we certainly did not anticipate that the road to the vineyard and winery would take the wildly unexpected turns we have been through.
STONE TROUGH WINERY
FAMILY-OWNED IN CLEBURNE, TEXAS
WE STARTED OUR JOURNEY INTO TEXAS WINE BY PLANTING A REGENERATIVE VINEYARD ON OUR FAMILY'S FARM IN APRIL 2020. A FREEZE IN FEBRUARY 2021 KILLED OUR 1,200+ TEMPRANILLO VINES, SO WE BOUGHT GRAPES GROWN IN THE TEXAS HIGH PLAINS AND WORKED WITH EXPERIENCED WINE MAKERS TO MAKE OUR 2020-2021 WINES.
